Amy LindgrenSecond Sunday Series – Editor’s Note: This is the eleventh of 12 columns on work and disability appearing over 12 months — one on each second Sunday of the month, from September through August. Previous columns discussed becoming unexpectedly disabled; whether to work with a disability, the subminimum wage, promotions for workers with disabilities, higher education decisions, self-advocating, career tips for family caretakers, testing limits as a worker with disabilities, the dilemma of revealing disabilities during job search, and overall concepts of disability in the workplace. Here’s an interesting statistic: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, people with disabilities in the labor force had a higher self-employment rate in 2021 than people who are not disabled. The numbers were 9.6% compared with 6.4% — or nearly half again as many more people, as a percentage of the population, with disabilities were working for themselves than those not reporti...Four dead in Voorheesville house fire

The newest addition to the Computer History Museum’s permanent collection is called ERMA — it’s short for Electronic Recording Machine, Accounting — an early banking computer that you could say is the great-grandmother of today’s ATMs and mobile banking apps.“ERMA was the first computerized banking system in the world,” said Raquel González, Silicon Valley Market President for Bank of America, which donated the massive machine to the museum in Mountain View. “Think about how far we have come from back then.”“Back then” was the period right after World War II, when a wave of prosperity meant a lot more business for banks like San Francisco-based Bank of America, which was adding about 23,000 checking accounts every month. But those extra accounts — and checks paying for new cars, new appliances and new mortgages — meant banks had to close their doors at 2 or 3 p.m. every day just so tellers could deal with ...Yellen Says US, China Have ‘Ample Room’ for Trade and Investment

Viktoria Dendrinou(Bloomberg) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the US and China should communicate “directly” on specific economic concerns, reiterating the need for improved exchanges between the two sides in her meetings with Chinese leaders. Beijing and Washington can make better decisions to strengthen their respective economies if they closely communicate and exchange views on various challenges amid a “complicated” global economic outlook, Yellen told her Chinese counterpart, Vice Premier He Lifeng.“It is my belief that a wide swath of our economies can interact in ways that are uncontroversial to both governments,” Yellen said in prepared remarks at the meeting with He on Saturday. “The fact that despite recent tensions we set a record for bilateral trade in 2022 suggests there is ample room for our firms to engage in trade and investment.”China and the US should join forces to tackle climate change, Yellen said...Doctor who drove Tesla off cliff asks court for diversion
