Boulder County sheriff, DA to discuss Marshall fire’s cause After 17 months of investigating everything from a religious cult to Xcel Energy power lines to an underground coal fire, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is set to announce the findings of its investigation into the origins of the 2021 Marshall fire.Boulder County Sheriff Curtis Johnson and District Attorney Michael Dougherty will discuss those findings at 10 a.m. Thursday during a news conference at the sheriff’s office. The wildfire was the most costly in Colorado history, destroying more than $2 billion in property. Two people died in the fire, and more than 1,000 homes and businesses were destroyed in Superior, Louisville and unincorporated Boulder County. The Marshall fire’s intensity was fueled by powerful winds that pushed the wildfire across parched grass and brush. It burned more than 6,000 acres after it first ignited around 11 a.m. Dec. 30, 2021. The wind was so strong that flames did what was thought to be impossible — jump all six lanes of U.S....

Smoky haze blanketing U.S. and Canada could last into the weekend

Smoky haze blanketing U.S. and Canada could last into the weekend On air quality maps, purple signifies the worst of it. In reality, it's a thick, hazardous haze that’s disrupting daily life for millions of people across the U.S. and Canada, blotting out skylines and turning skies orange. And with weather systems expected to hardly budge, the smoky blanket billowing from wildfires in Quebec and Nova Scotia and sending plumes of fine particulate matter as far away as North Carolina and northern Europe should persist into Thursday and possibly the weekend. That means at least another day, or more, of a dystopian-style detour that's chased players from ballfields, actors from Broadway stages, delayed thousands of flights and sparked a resurgence in mask wearing and remote work — all while raising concerns about the health effects of prolonged exposure to such bad air.The weather system that's driving the great Canadian-American smoke out — a low-pressure system over Maine and Nova Scotia — "will probably be hanging around at least for the next few days...

Supreme Court sides with Jack Daniel’s in trademark dispute involving a poop-themed dog toy By Devan Cole | CNNThe Supreme Court on Thursday sided with Jack Daniel’s in a dispute over a poop-themed dog toy that parodies its iconic liquor bottle. The ruling was unanimous.Though the court’s decision is a win for Jack Daniel’s – which argued that an appeals court erred when it said the parodic toy was “non-commercial” and therefore enjoyed constitutional protection – the justices declined to grant the distiller’s request to throw out the test an appeals court used when it ruled in favor of the toy, a move that would have given trademark holders wide latitude to sue companies that parody their marks on consumer goods.Related ArticlesBusiness | Supreme Court, in surprise, rules for Black voters in Alabama in congressional redistricting case Business | Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas gets extension to disclose GOP megadonor’s gifts Business | Judge blocks Florida ban on trans minor care Business | Mike Pence f...

Nick Candela.“We kept our distance and played it cool,” Candela said. “He kept climbing down a little further every couple of minutes, so we were fortunate to not have to risk going up in our ladder truck.”The episode started out with a 911 call from the hospital’s security personnel advising that a patient had fled the medical facility on H...
