Footpath to Howell Island being removed in St. Louis County

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation is removing the causeway to Howell Island Conservation Area on the Missouri River in St. Louis County because of flooding. A Corps of Engineers' water control structure currently supports the causeway, which connects the island to a parking lot on North Eatherton Road and spans the Centaur Chute.MDC is removing the causeway because increased flooding over the past 15 years has caused costly repairs and increased maintenance. They will keep the underlying water control structure in place. An MDC contractor is currently performing the removal project. Howell Island will only offer boat-in access from the Missouri River once the causeway is removed.Flooding has made the island inaccessible by foot. The MDC reported that water covered the causeway for 49% of the time during the last 12 years and for at least 4 years, 60% of the time. ST. LOUIS - The Bi-State Development Board of Commissioners has approved a $390 million contract with goals to improve the St. Louis MetroLink experience and replace aging cars. Bi-State officials announced a $390.4 million contract with Siemens Mobility Inc. on Wednesday. The contract will allow Bi-State to purchase up to 55 new light-rail cars over the next several years. Man Pronounced Dead after Hit-and-Run Bicycle Collision near Sylvan AvenueMODESTO, CA (November 30, 2023) – Early Tuesday evening, one man was fatally struck in a hit-and-run bicycle crash on McHenry Avenue and Sylvan Avenue.The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m., near East Union Avenue.Officers say a bicyclist was hit by the driver of a southbound light-colored Kia Soul while crossing McHenry Avenue. Following the incident, the Kia driver fled without providing assistance to the injured victim. Emergency medical responders transported the bicyclist to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away due to his injuries.The identity of the deceased victim is currently undisclosed. Authorities are actively searching for the Kia Soul, which may have front windshield and passenger side damages. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A young teenage girl who police said was involved in over a dozen organized retails thefts of over $30,000 in merchandise in San Francisco was arrested, the San Francisco Police Department announced Thursday.San Francisco police investigating organized retail crimes on the 800 block of Market Street had identified the 14-year-old girl as one of the suspects in a large number of retail thefts, SFPD said. The thefts were being committed by a “large group of juvenile and adult suspects” and stole merchandise totaling over $30,000, according to police.
