(WHTM) -- Emergency vehicles have a multitude of ways to get our attention, including flashing lights, horns and sirens. But why do police cars use red and blue lights? Why not red and purple, or any other combination? Red and blue lights are used on U.S. police cars for many reasons, but the main one is that they are highly visible and easily distinguishable from one another.According to LEDequipped.com, it also has to do with color association, among other factors. When most people see the color red, they usually associate it with danger or the inclination to stop and look. But this could create an issue when emergency lights are only red, as they can be confused with brake lights. That is where the color blue comes in. How are movies rated in the United States? The city of St. Paul has been gradually replacing LED street lights suffering from an unusual manufacturer’s defect — they’re turning blue. The Autobahn series LED bulbs, which are failing prematurely at different times and rates, were installed in “cobra”-style overhanging street lights across the city between 2017 and 2019 and cast a bluish-purple light as they begin to fail.“We tend to notice a few more with the colder weather,” said Lisa Hiebert, a spokesperson for St. Paul Public Works. The problems have been reported far and wide, including Charlotte, North Carolina, Topeka, Kansas, Vancouver, Canada and Dublin, Ireland.Hiebert said the city does not closely track how many lights have been replaced to date — the total is easily in the dozens — but the city’s street lighting system spans more than 37,000 light fixtures on 32,000 light poles. Martha Trillo signed a lease before the pandemic to move her ice cream shop, Heaven Creamery, to the 2900 block of Larimer Street because it got more traffic than her previous spot a block away. Then the pandemic hit and the city, hoping to help restaurants struggling with social distancing, closed the street in front of her place.Three years later, it’s still closed — much to Trillo’s chagrin. She said blocking off the one-block stretch in RiNo may help the bars on the street, but it doesn’t help Heaven.“If you’re going to come and buy ice cream, you do and leave or stay and eat it and leave,” she said. “But you don’t see them get another scoop of ice cream. When you go to a bar and get a beer, you get a second, third, fourth.”RELATED: Here’s why this Larimer block wants to stay closed to cars while other streets have reopenedOf the handful of stretches of road that Denver closed to vehicles during the pandemic, three remain.
