There’s a lot to learn, but can these rookies lead the Oakland A’s next resurgence? OAKLAND – The Oakland A’s coaching staff and front office are using this time with just under four weeks left in the regular season to help determine which players can be a part of the solution going forward.First baseman Ryan Noda, second baseman Zack Gelof, and outfielder Lawrence Butler figure into the team’s long-term plans — and could even be key ingredients for whenever the A’s are again ready to compete for a playoff spot.Gelof was just named the American League Rookie of the Month for August and Noda has played his best baseball of the year since he returned from a fractured jaw midway through last month, helping the A’s put together a positive stretch in what’s otherwise been a forgettable 2023 season. Those two and Butler combined for five hits and three home runs in a 10-inning, 6-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at the Coliseum on Monday. Noda hit his 14th home run of the season and Butler added his third and fourth bombs of the year as the A’s had their three-game w...

Giants secondary depth will face challenge from Cowboys passing game EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The way rookie cornerbacks Deonte Banks and Tre Hawkins have fit so seamlessly into the New York Giants defense, veteran Adoree Jackson has found himself playing a relatively new position.New York’s top coverage cornerback last season, Jackson has been playing more against the slot receiver since training camp opened in late July. With the season opener against Dallas coming on Sunday night, Jackson may very well be paired against Cowboys top wide out CeeDee Lamb in the nationally televised game. It’s not the way many envisioned the Giants cornerback rotation this spring. Jackson was the best defensive back on the team in 2022 and New York felt it had found a starter to play opposite him when it drafted Banks out of Maryland in the first round. Two days later, the Giants took Hawkins in the sixth round out of Old Dominion. Column: Alex Palou dominantes IndyCar amid lawsuits and scrutiny of his career decisions PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Alex Palou wore a McLaren papaya-colored shirt at the Miami Grand Prix in May and a $1 million Richard Mille custom watch adorned his wrist.Given only to McLaren’s F1 drivers, the timepieces are a talking point among the collecting crowd. Simon Pagenaud, himself a Mille ambassador, immediately spotted the watch.“Yes, but it doesn’t work,” Palou said.“What do you mean it doesn’t work?” Pagenaud asked, popping out of his chair to seize Palou’s right arm.“It just doesn’t do anything,” Palou said with a shrug.“You know you have to wind it, right?” asked an incredulous Pagenaud, who began twisting the outer dial.Palou always has had some naivete since arriving in the United States at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. He was a 22-year-old Spaniard who most recently had been racing under the radar in Japan, and he never had won a championship at any level. He slipped in during the isolated “bubble” 2020 season with small Dale Coyne Racing, where Palou sec...
