Beavers released into California wild for 1st time in 70 years (KRON) -- A family of seven beavers is thriving this December after spending their first two months exploring the wilderness of Plumas County. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's October beaver release marked the first time in seven decades that the department released beavers into the wild."The new family group of beavers join a single resident beaver in the valley with the ultimate objective of re-establishing a breeding population that will maintain the mountain meadow ecosystem, its processes, and the habitat it provides for numerous other species," state wildlife officials wrote. Walters: California labor laws’ unintended consequences

Walters: California labor laws’ unintended consequences When federal government and state governments passed laws governing wages, working hours and other workplace conditions prior to World War II, agricultural labor was exempted. Many years later, after the 40-hour work week became standard, California’s Industrial Welfare Commission decreed that farmworkers could work up to 10 hours a day or six days a week before overtime pay kicked in.In 2016, however, years of lobbying by unions and other groups finally paid off when the Legislature decreed that the eight-hour day and 40-hour work week for agricultural labor would be phased in. Then-Gov. Jerry Brown signed the legislation, Assembly Bill 1066, despite warnings from farm groups that it would disrupt their industry.Recently, the University of California’s Cooperative Extension branch, which researches agricultural issues, released a study indicating that having a 40-hour work week has not been as beneficial to farmworkers as its sponsors promised.Alexandra Hill, an assistant professor ...

49ers report card: Clutch moments in Washington deliver win, No. 1 seed LANDOVER, Md. – Here is how the 49ers (12-4) graded in Sunday’s 27-10 win over the host Washington Commanders to help secure the No. 1 seed for the upcoming NFC playoffs:PASS OFFENSE: ABrock Purdy rebounded from his career-worst outing on Christmas (four interceptions) and delivered a turnover-free outing that finished strong. He was 22-of-28 for 230 yards with touchdown passes to Deebo Samuel (2 yards; first-quarter shovel pass) and Brandon Aiyuk (17 yards; fourth-quarter improv theater). Purdy’s 4,280 yards this season thus catapulted him past Steve Young (4,170) and Jeff Garcia (4,278) for the most in a 49ers season. Purdy’s 31 touchdown passes are tied for fourth-most, behind Steve Young (36, 1998; 35, 1994) and Jeff Garcia (32, 2001). One more: Purdy’s 124.7 passer rating marked his eighth over 120 this season, which trails only Aaron Rodgers (10, 2020) in NFL history. That is where Purdy’s numbers likely will finish if the 49ers wisely rest him in a Week 18 finale with the Ram...

Happy New Year!

Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 13:42:59 GMT

Happy New Year! Starting off with patchy areas of fog and smoke infused from the fireworks shows last night. Visibility has been poor especially around inland locations.A chilly high pressure area remains in charge providing clear skies, light winds and helping temperatures go down into the 40’s and 50’s.Today will feature bright sunshine like Sunday. However, mid to high level clouds are set to increase on Tuesday and Wednesday due to nearby fronts. They will be limited with moisture, so only an isolated shower possible with the second front on Thursday. Another one crosses through Sunday (maybe wetter?).As far as temperatures are concerned, there will be some ups and downs, but not as significant as the cold air we are currently experiencing.Have a wonderful New Year South Florida!
