The students said this experience has been more than they could ask for and being in D.C. on the same day a new house speaker was elected, is something they could never learn in the classroom.“I can’t believe all of the new connections I’ve made with the people I haven’t met before I left from Miami, Florida. I am very excited to meet the leader of our country,” said Keon Francis, one of the students who visited the White House. The students had the unique opportunity to visit D.C. as President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden welcomed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his first lady to the White House during their official visit to the United States. Speedy Clouds and Showers Continue this Turbulent Thursday

Speedy Clouds and Showers Continue this Turbulent Thursday The winds remain the big story this Thursday as the windy week continues courtesy of a strong area of high pressure to our north.Unfortunately, winds do not look to relax much until perhaps Monday, so breezy to windy conditions with wind gusts up to 30 mph do remain in the forecast. This will keep hazardous marine conditions in play with a Small Craft Advisory in effect through at least Friday evening and a High Surf Advisory for the east coast through this evening. With this onshore flow and the King Tides in place, a Coastal Flood Statement is also in effect for minor saltwater flooding during times of high tide. This Thursday, expect clouds to dominate much of the day with quick-moving showers in spots, especially Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys. This will hold highs close to normal into the mid 80s.As high pressure shifts farther south over the next day or two, that should also nudge the moisture that has been in place for these showers also more to the south, meaning more sunshine...

Shooter’s carnage unleashes terror in Maine, manhunt continues The latest mass shooting to afflict the nation claimed about two dozen lives and left more than 50 others wounded Wednesday night, sending a small New England town into terror. The carnage in Lewiston, Maine, began around 7 p.m., when the first of at least three shooting attacks was reported, according to the Lewiston Sun Journal. At least 22 were reported dead. A manhunt involving hundreds of officers was underway late Wednesday, Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said at a press conference.Cops first received calls about a shooter at a bowling alley, the Sun Journal reported. A short time later, another shooting struck a nearby bar and grill. A children’s event was happening at the bowling alley at the time of the violence, Lewiston Councilor Robert McCarthy told CNN.Maine State Police urged residents to shelter in place following reports of an active shooter in multiple locations.“Please stay inside your home with the doors locked,” they wrote social med...

Sirens, then eerily quiet: Scenes from the night of Maine’s worst mass shooting

Sirens, then eerily quiet: Scenes from the night of Maine’s worst mass shooting Police have still shared few details about the mass shootings that left as many as 20 people dead in Maine’s second-largest city on Wednesday night. But it was clear that something devastating had hit Lewiston, in the hours after a shooter allegedly opened fire in the Just In Time Recreation bowling alley and Schemengees Bar & Grille. It was the first time a Maine community had experienced the kind of highly public mass shooting that makes national news. That was clear from the large public safety response — followed by the groups of journalists in the hours since.Around 8 p.m., the interstate highway leading to Lewiston was filled with police cruisers and first responders racing to the scene — lights flashing, sirens screaming.Downtown, the streets were eerily quiet as residents mostly heeded a lockdown warning, save for the occasional bicyclist or passerby.“This is crazy,” said resident Jess Paquette, who was out walking her dog Henrietta. “This is just n...

Boston City Council moves to rename Faneuil Hall

Boston City Council moves to rename Faneuil Hall The Boston City Council on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a resolution that calls for renaming Faneuil Hall, a popular tourist site that is named after a wealthy merchant who owned and traded slaves. The measure, authored by Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson, is likely to garner political support for changing the name of Faneuil Hall but it remains unclear when, if ever, the name will be changed. The City Council doesn’t have the authority to change the name. That power lies with a little-known city board called the Public Facilities Commission. In her resolution, Fernandes Anderson decried the building’s namesake, Peter Faneuil, as a “white supremacist, a slave trader, and a slave owner who contributed nothing recognizable to the ideal of democracy.”“Symbols are extremely important,” Fernandes Anderson said ahead of the 10-3 vote. “As we look at them, we understand, internalize and become our environment … We continue to believe we ...

Lamar Jackson, Ravens focused on not being ‘complacent’ vs. 1-6 Cardinals in wake of blowout win

Lamar Jackson, Ravens focused on not being ‘complacent’ vs. 1-6 Cardinals in wake of blowout win The Ravens’ 38 points Sunday against the Lions was their highest output of the season. Lamar Jackson’s 357 passing yards were the second-most of his career, and he produced a near-perfect passer rating of 155.8. And Baltimore’s defense shut down a Detroit team that was averaging 28 points, 383.7 yards and had scored at least 20 points in 15 straight games.Yet, quarterback Lamar Jackson, who on Wednesday was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week, didn’t so much as crack a smile afterward, a demeanor that, to a man, seems to have carried over this week as the Ravens (5-2) prepare to play the Cardinals (1-6) on Sunday in Arizona. The Ravens, at least publicly, don’t appear to be bathing in their own press clippings, to borrow a phrase from basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton. Of course, that’s what happens when you have a team that beat the Bengals in Cincinnati in Week 2 only to lose at home the following week to the Indianapolis Colts. The Ravens ...

Callahan: The Patriots can’t take Demario Douglas off the field anymore

Callahan: The Patriots can’t take Demario Douglas off the field anymore Thank God for the little guy out of Liberty. The 5-foot-8 firecracker exploding out of the slot. The best pure receiver Bill Belichick has drafted in 10, 15 … maybe 20 years?Yes, Demario Douglas is that good, and the Patriots just might be winless without him.Let’s review. In Week 3, Douglas secured a long third-down catch the play before the Pats scored their only touchdown in a tight win over the Jets. Against Buffalo last weekend, the Patriots let Douglas play more than half of their offensive snaps for the first time all season. From those snaps, he squeezed 74 yards and half-dozen first downs that led directly to scores in a 29-25 triumph.Sitting Douglas for more than half of any future game would be coaching malpractice. He can fumble or flip a couple birds at the crowd. It shouldn’t matter. The kid has to play. The Pats average 2.67 more yards per play with Douglas on the field versus when he’s off, the second-highest differential among their offensive regu...

Nigeria’s Supreme Court refuses to void president’s election and dismisses opposition challenges

Nigeria’s Supreme Court refuses to void president’s election and dismisses opposition challenges ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria’s Supreme Court refused Thursday to void the recent election of President Bola Tinubu and dismissed the political opposition’s challenges, which argued that the vote was flawed and that Tinubu was not qualified to seek or hold the presidency. The court held in a majority ruling that the grounds of the challenges were “devoid of merits,” ending a dispute that had put Africa’s most populous country on the edge after the February election. An appeals court in Nigeria also rejected the petitions last month. Two other candidates in the election separately challenged Tinubu’s win, alleging that he failed to meet the minimum educational qualification to run, did not secure the required number of votes and that the country’s election commission did not follow its own provisions in collating and announcing the election results.During a televised hearing in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, the Supreme Court dismissed the challenges from the Peoples Democratic Par...
