Jordan Westburg brought in Sunday’s game-winning run with a ball into the stands. But instead of coming off his bat, it went off his left hand.A 101 mph fastball from Minnesota Twins right-hander Jhoan Duran nailed the Orioles’ rookie infielder with the bases loaded in Sunday’s eighth inning at Camden Yards, bringing in what proved to be the game-winning run in Baltimore’s 2-1 victory. The ball ricocheted off Westburg’s hand into the seats behind home plate. The pair of runs scored in the decisive inning was double what the Orioles (49-33) managed in their previous 27 offensive frames. With the rally, Baltimore ended its four-game losing streak and avoided what would’ve been its first sweep since May 2022.The Orioles have not been swept in 66 series since promoting Adley Rutschman, a catcher then ranked as baseball’s top prospect, to the majors. His arrival has been transformative, with Baltimore overcoming a slow start without him to finish ...Beep, beep! This popular e-shuttle service is coming through

APATZINGAN, Mexico (AP) — The drug cartel violence that citizen self-defense leader Hipolito Mora gave his life fighting flared anew on Sunday, just one day after he was buried, as shootings and road blockades hit the city of Apatzingan, a regional hub in Mexico’s hot lands. Roads in and out of Apatzingan were blocked Sunday morning by trucks and buses pulled across the road by cartel gunmen, as the vehicles’ owners stood by helplessly. “They told me to park my truck across the road. They said if I moved it, they would burn it,” said one truck driver, who asked his name not be used for fear of reprisals. And in the city of Apatzingan, the regional hub where the area’s agricultural products are traded, gunmen carjacked a family, took their auto at gun point and used it to shoot another driver to death just a few blocks away. The victim’s car was left dangling from a bridge as he lay dead inside, slumped onto the passenger’s side seat. The execution was so quick that his car...South Africa Women’s World Cup team sits out game in pay dispute as 13-year-old player called in

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A standoff between South Africa’s Women’s World Cup squad and the national soccer association over pay and other issues forced officials to field a makeshift team of little-known players that included a 13-year-old for a game against Botswana on Sunday. The game was supposed to be the final warm-up match for the African women’s champion on home soil before it headed off to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, but it turned into an embarrassment on and off the field as the entire World Cup squad sat out the game.South Africa’s team of replacement players hastily pulled together from local clubs lost 5-0 to Botswana at the Tsakane Stadium near Johannesburg. They were 4-0 down at halftime in a game that was delayed for an hour at the request of the South African Football Association (SAFA) so it could scramble and put together a team.South Africa coach Desiree Ellis said one of the players she had to draft in wa...Heavy rains flood Chicago roads and force NASCAR to cut short its downtown street race

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thousands of hotel workers in Southern California walked off the job on Sunday, demanding higher pay and better benefits in what the union is calling the largest strike in its history. Cooks, room attendants, dishwashers, servers, bellmen and front desk agents at hotels were picketing outside major hotels in Los Angeles and Orange counties just as the summer tourist is ramping up. Last month, members of Unite Here Local 11 voted 96% in favor of authorizing the strike. The union is seeking better wages, improved healthcare benefits, higher pension contributions and less strenuous workloads. In addition, the union wants to create a “hospitality workforce housing fund” to help workers deal with the soaring costs of living in greater Los Angeles. Many employees report commuting hours to work because they can’t afford to live near their jobs. “Our members were devastated first by the pandemic, and now by the greed of their bosses,” union co-president Kurt Petersen...Trump’s South Carolina rally attracted crowd in range of 50,000 to 55,000, police chief estimates

BALTIMORE — One run, a fantastic start from their starting pitcher and scoreless innings from relievers Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran was a winning recipe for the Twins on Saturday. The Twins tried to go back to that same recipe on Sunday, but this time, well, it didn’t quite work.Starter Sonny Gray was fantastic through six innings and Jax did his part, too, but the normally-reliable Duran faltered in the eighth inning, giving up a pair of runs as the Baltimore Orioles took the series finale 2-1.After striking out the first batter he faced in the eighth, Duran allowed a softly-hit single to Adley Rutschman. Anthony Santander followed by smoking a single to cap off a nine-pitch at-bat before Aaron Hicks brought home the Oroles’ first run of the day with a single to center.A nice stop by Alex Kirilloff at first base saved Duran — momentarily. But after falling behind 3-0 in the count to the next batter, Ryan O’Hearn, the Twins put him on base. Duran promptly hit Jordan Westburg with a ...Latest news
