GOP's Scalise ends his bid to become House speaker as Republican holdouts refuse to back the nominee WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Steve Scalise ended his bid to become House speaker late Thursday after hardline holdouts refused to back the party’s nominee, throwing the GOP majority into deeper chaos and leaving the chamber still unable to function.Scalise told GOP colleagues at a closed-door evening meeting of his decision and pointedly declined to announce backing for anyone else, including his chief rival, Rep. Jim Jordan, the far-right Judiciary Committee chairman backed by Donald Trump who had already told colleagues he no longer would seek the job.Next steps are uncertain as the House is essentially closed while the Republican majority tries to elect a speaker after ousting Kevin McCarthy from the job.“I just shared with my colleagues that I’m withdrawing my name as a candidate for speaker-designee,” Scalise, the House majority leader, said as he emerged from the closed-door meeting at the Capitol.Scalise, R-La., said the Republican majority still has to come together and "ope...

Kiszla: Broncos need to shut down the Errors Tour of Russell Wilson and admit they need a new quarterback KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For the Broncos, it was the same sad song, 16th verse. Misery? We know it all too well, Taylor Swift. With Swift in the house Thursday night to cheer on new beau and Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce, the Broncos continued their Errors Tour in this miserable NFL season, losing to the Chiefs for the 16th time in a row, this time by a score of 19-8.It’s enough to make a guy call in sick instead of report to work against his former team. Am I right, Frank Clark? The Broncos decided prior to the game to move on from Clark, who won two Super Bowl rings with the Chiefs before signing with Denver as a free agent. But Clark won’t be the last to go prior to the NFL trade deadline on Oct. 31. With a record of 1-5, it’s time for Denver to get down to the serious business of rebuilding.Outside of cornerback Pat Surtain II, whom the Broncos would be crazy to trade, would any member of the Broncos have big value on the trade market?Receiver Jerry Jeudy, whose te...

Meanwhile, the Broncos allowed the Chiefs to score just one touchdown in five trips inside the Denver 20-yard line. In the first quarter, the Chiefs were at Denver’s 15 when Bonitto grabbed Mahomes by the ankle, forcing him to throw an interception to safety Justin Simmons. Broncos offense goes dormant, Russell Wilson picked twice in 19-8 loss to Chiefs on Thursday night KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On a short week of preparation and facing Kansas City as a double-digit underdog on national television, Broncos coach Sean Payton outlined the path to an upset.“If I gave you Sunday halftime lead win percentage, so the normal time-slot games on Sunday — (who’s) winning at the half, and who wins the game — it’s probably in the 60-some percentile,” he said Tuesday. “What’s unusual is on Thursday nights is it spikes. I just finished talking about fast starts.“It’s important.”Only problem: His offense didn’t get the message.Payton’s group got shut out into the fourth quarter, quarterback Russell Wilson turned in a performance that vacillated between disjointed and disastrous and the Broncos lost to the Chiefs for the 16th straight time to move to 1-5 to start the season. This version of the same old story: 19-8.“To win in this league you’ve got to be better throwing the ball,” said Payton, who thought the wind affe...

Broncos 4 downs: Vance Joseph’s defense showed up for Taylor Swift. Too bad Sean Payton, Jerry Jeudy didn’t.

Broncos 4 downs: Vance Joseph’s defense showed up for Taylor Swift. Too bad Sean Payton, Jerry Jeudy didn’t. Initial thoughts from Broncos’ 19-8 loss to Kansas City in Week 6 at GEHA Field:1. Sorry, Jerry. Steve Smith was right. Sean Payton has still never been shut out as an NFL coach. So there’s that. (Cue the golf claps.) But the Broncos’ first 17 pass plays of the evening also netted 31 yards. And the clock management? Yikes. This one felt funky right from the start. After clapping back at NFL Network analyst Steve Smith, causing Smith during the pregame to call the 2020 first-round pick a “tier 3” wide receiver, Broncos wideout Jerry Jeudy responded to the challenge by … catching three balls for 14 yards on five targets. Smith was right on the money, and Jeudy knows it. The truth hurts. And it hurts even more when it’s coming from one of the best at his position for a generation.2. Andy Reid messed around … and didn’t find out. Credit where it’s due — “off” coverage aside, Vance Joseph’s defense, in a flip o...
