(CNN) — The United States Food and Drug Administration will test out labels on the front of food packages in the hope of giving shoppers better access to nutrition information, the agency said. The goal is to address diet-related chronic disease by “empowering consumers with nutrition information to help them more easily identify healthier choices and encouraging industry innovation to produce healthier foods,” the FDA said in a recent regulatory filing. The agency hopes to enact new regulations on labels by December, according to the filing.Front of package labels would complement — not replace — traditional nutrition facts labels, with the intention of helping people with less nutritional knowledge identify foods that would be part of a healthy eating pattern, the FDA said in a June 14 statement.Nutrition might not be clear at a glanceMost people don’t have enough nutritional knowledge to get the information they need easily from nutrition facts labels, said Natalie M...3 horses injured, euthanized at Wyoming horse race

EVANSTON, Wyoming (KSTU) — Three horses were injured and put down all in one day while racing at Wyoming Downs this past weekend. This comes one month after 12 horses died at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Churchill Downs Inc. has since suspended all racing as they investigate the cause of the deaths.“I had never actually been to a horse race before and I did not expect to see what I saw that day,” said Marina, who was at the race this past weekend.Marina said she is still losing sleep over what she witnessed at the track in Evanston, Wyoming.“The second race, the first horse went down and he actually broke his leg,” she described, “And then the next race, the second horse went down, but this horse did not get back up, jockey flew off, also did not get back up.”She said it was too tragic to watch and she got up to leave.“Just as I look up, the third horse in a row goes down and also doesn’t get back up,” Marina said. “This was not just an accident wher...MASN: Orioles, Nationals reach agreement on some past payments, but others are headed to arbitration
Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 16:58:31 GMT
After more than a decade of dispute over precisely how much the Orioles and Washington Nationals each were owed by the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network for 2012 to 2016, the two clubs have reached a settlement, according to a person familiar with the agreement. The network, majority-owned by the Baltimore club, will pay both teams $99.2 million, according to the person, who said the calculation of interest payments, had been among the sticking points. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because neither team had made an announcement. The settlement closes a lengthy, bitter chapter between the teams during which they disagreed over the distribution of hundreds of millions of dollars for the broadcast rights to each teams’ games. But it does not necessarily end the quarrel between the clubs.Going forward, they must agree on how much each are owed beyond 2016. That determination is to be made by a Major League Baseball arbitration panel that has not yet convened a hearing on the ma...Tyler Wells’ ugly second inning dooms Orioles in 7-2 loss to Rays as teams split series

The Rays nearly overcame a large deficit Tuesday with a four-run inning. On Wednesday, a four-run second was all they needed to beat the Orioles.Baltimore starting pitcher Tyler Wells had a disastrous second inning — allowing two home runs and committing two errors — and the Orioles’ bats couldn’t mount a comeback in a 7-2 loss.A day after tallying 10 hits and eight runs, the Orioles managed just four hits, struggling to square up rookie starter Taj Bradley or Tampa Bay’s lights-out bullpen. The lone offense of the afternoon came on solo home runs to straightaway center field from Ramón Urías in the third inning and Gunnar Henderson in the ninth.Baltimore (45-27) and the MLB-best Rays (52-25) end the two-game series at Tropicana Field with a split. The Orioles are five games back of Tampa Bay for first place in the American League East. The two solo home runs Wells surrendered in the second continued a concerning trend amid his impressive campa...Movie review: ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ looks (and sounds) the part but isn’t exhilarating

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” debuted in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received what could kindly be described as a tepid response from critics.Based on a recent advanced screening of the fifth and, supposedly, final film in the beloved series dating to 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” it’s pretty easy to say “Dial” isn’t some horrendous “Indiana Jones” adventure. But, alas, it isn’t a particularly strong one, either. It’s as if talented filmmaker James Mangold — taking the reins from franchise director Steven Spielberg — set out to make a convincing forgery of an “Indiana Jones.”Aside from Spielberg, all the requisite ingredients are there, from Harrison Ford in the titular role — wearing his leather jacket and fedora and occasionally cracking that iconic whip — to an archeological treasure to scheming Nazis to one last rousing score from the great John Williams. And yet the affair constantly feels a little off, starting with the action-packed first act set 25 y...Outlook bleak for passengers on the Titan, despite massive rescue effort

By MARK PRATT (Associated Press)BOSTON (AP) — Time is quickly running out in the search for a missing submersible that lost contact with its mother ship on Sunday as it descended to the wreck of the Titanic with five people aboard. As an international fleet of surveillance vessels and aircraft forges ahead with ongoing search and rescue efforts, each passing second makes it less likely that the passengers on the Titan will be found alive as their oxygen supply is expected to run out by Thursday morning.Even if the Titan is located in the North Atlantic, it could be nearly impossible to reach if it is stuck on the ocean floor at roughly 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) near the Titanic’s wreckage. The five people on board are pilot Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, the company leading the expedition; British adventurer Hamish Harding; Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, a father and son from a prominent Pakistani family; and French undersea explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Narg...Paris police look at gas leak as possible cause of explosion and fire that injured 24

By ANGELA CHARLTON and ALEX TURNBULL (Associated Press)PARIS (AP) — A strong explosion rocked a building in Paris’ Left Bank on Wednesday, injuring at least 24 people, igniting a fire that sent smoke soaring over the French capital’s monuments and prompting an evacuation of other properties, authorities said. Police were investigating suspicions that a gas leak caused the blast. The facade of the building in the 5th arrondissement collapsed. Emergency services were searching for two people who might be trapped inside, the district’d mayor said. The explosion happened near the historic Val de Grace military hospital, in one of the most upscale neighborhoods of the French capital. Some 270 firefighters were involved in putting out the flames and 70 emergency vehicles were sent to the scene. The fire was contained Wednesday evening but not yet extinguished as Paris bars and restaurants celebrated the summer solstice with a citywide annual music festival.Sirens wai...Missing OceanGate Expeditions Titanic sub updates: Navy sends salvage equipment, rescuers hear underwater ‘banging’ noises

The rescuers searching for the missing OceanGate Expeditions sub with five people on board have heard underwater “banging” noises in the search area, some “cause for hope” with limited time left to find the sub that explores the Titanic wreck site.Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy on Wednesday was reportedly sending salvage equipment to the North Atlantic Ocean to lift the 20,000-pound sub if it’s found. The Navy’s Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System can lift up to 60,000 pounds. The U.S. Coast Guard out of Boston and partner agencies have been desperately searching for the missing 21-foot submersible research vessel. The sub on Sunday morning lost contact during a dive, about 900 miles east of Cape Cod. Thursday is when the 96-hour oxygen supply is expected to end for the five people on board.Early Wednesday morning, the Coast Guard shared that some underwater noises have been heard in the remote area of the North Atlantic Ocean.“Yesterday, the Canadian...Henrik Lundqvist, Caroline Ouellette among Hockey Hall of Fame’s class of 2023

JERUSALEM (AP) — Tel Aviv University announced on Wednesday that it has removed the Sackler family from the full name of its medical school after decades of donations from the makers of OxyContin. The move came after years of petitions to pull the longtime donors’ name from the campus while the Sacklers faced extensive lawsuits for their role in the opioid epidemic. Last month an American court approved a plan for the maker of OxyContin to settle thousands of legal claims connected to the opioid epidemic while shielding the billionaire owners of Purdue Pharma, the Sackler family, from additional lawsuits. The university said that “the Sackler family has kindly agreed to remove their name from the Faculty of Medicine” in order to allow new donors a chance to put their name on it, while it “gratefully acknowledges the multi-decade contributions of the Sackler family.”The Sacklers have been donors to the university for 50 years, it said.
