Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 20:57:54 GMT

By Emily Weinstein, The New York TimesIt’s Cookie Week, haven’t you heard? We just published seven new cookie recipes with videos on New York Times Cooking, and there are many more from years past on our YouTube channel, in case you want to revisit Eric Kim’s frosted sugar cookies or Vaughn Vreeland’s eggnog snickerdoodles. It’s also the moment for potato latkes and the other delicacies of Hanukkah. I personally feel that latkes can make an excellent dinner themselves if they’re properly adorned; I top mine with a schmear of sour cream and a piece of smoked salmon, though no one would be mad about a little caviar or a poached egg. If you’re looking for a meatier main course, Melissa Clark’s paprika chicken below would do nicely.1. Sheet-Pan Paprika Chicken With Tomatoes and ParmesanThis deeply savory, weeknight-friendly sheet-pan chicken is worth buying a new jar of sweet paprika for, especially if you can’t remember when you got the one in your spice drawer (for those Fourth of July...

Barrie’s eternally youthful creation Peter Pan, a character who’s appeared in many film and stage  incarnations — and on to Dodie Smith’s “The One Hundred and One Dalmatians,” which was adapted by ...

Review: ‘Sondheim’ delivers worthy tribute to Broadway legend

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 20:57:54 GMT

Watching archived interviews with Stephen Sondheim lends itself to a faulty conclusion — he’s just an ordinary, regular guy. There he is, lying down on the couch in a faded blue polo, his favorite pencil matching his shirt color. On the coffee table beside him is an electric sharpener which he keeps terribly busy. The whole approach just feels so nonchalant and ironic. To think this might have been how he was chillin’ when he penned “Follies,” “Merrily We Roll Along,” “Assassins,” or  “Sweeney Todd” is astounding. In these moments, Sondheim comes across as a really cool uncle who just happens to be changing the course of theater history with every new composition, all while properly resting.Yeah, no big whoop. The strength of San Jose Playhouse’s production of “Sondheim on Sondheim” is how it exudes the tenderness that surrounds the late composer and lyricist, a giant in the field who was never really known for hummable, commercial hits. Originally conceived and directed by coll...
